I’ve just finished updating the Fuel Comparison Chart at my alternative heating site and corn is once again the least expensive fuel. Even at its all time high of $7.60 a bushel at the end of June, it was still less expensive than all other fuel types.
Since then the price has retreated to $5.42/bushel or $12.10 to produce 1 MM (million) Btu of heat. (The cost to produce 1 MM Btu of heat from any given fuel is useful as an “apples to apples” method of comparing fuel prices).
Based on today’s prices, $1 of fuel corn provides the same amount of heat as $2.25 of heating oil.
The price for a ton of wood pellets has risen 10% since the Summer ‘08 Update and now averages $299/ton, or $18.69 per 1MM Btu. The reason behind the increase is a shrinking supply of sawdust (the raw material for wood pellets) due to the slowdown in new home construction. Also, some manufacturers of wood pellets report having to send their trucks as far as 400 miles to retrieve raw material contributing further to rising costs.
Despite the recent increase, wood pellets are still 30% less expensive to heat with than oil.
A cord of seasoned hardwood for the ‘08 - ‘09 heating season now costs around $295, or $17.90 per 1 Mil Btu. This is a third less than the cost of fuel oil for an equal amount of heat. If you want to save even more by seasoning your own hardwood, green wood usually sells for $50 less per cord than seasoned.
Bear in mind, the 1 MM Btu “apples to apples” cost comparison does not take into account the fuel efficiency of your heating appliance. The efficiency of your furnace or stove has a huge impact on what you actually end up paying to heat your home. For example; an 80% efficient heater will consume 23% less fuel than one rated at 65%.
Unlike the struggling auto industry, heating appliance manufacturers have always understood the value of fuel efficiency. Many newer model pellet stoves, outdoor furnaces and fireplace inserts offer efficiency ratings well above 80%.
The two pillars of cost effective heating, alternative or otherwise, will always be burning the least expensive fuel in the most efficient heater.
You can control fuel costs to some degree by waiting, if possible, for prices to moderate as is the case with corn. If you heat with wood pellets the best deals usually occur right after the end of the heating season. And anyone who heats with wood already knows the cheapest wood is the wood you cut yourself.
You do, however, have much more control over the efficiency of your heating appliance by adhering to a regular maintenance schedule. If you haven’t already tuned up your furnace or pellet stove this year for maximum efficiency, time is running out.
Please note: The prices quoted for corn, wood pellets and seasoned hardwood in this article were accurate on the day it was written but will continue to change as market forces dictate.

Ray-Bernice Alexandra Kaiser Eames was a renowned American designer, filmmaker, as well as artist. Many of the iconic designs of the twentieth century are attributed to Ray Eames along with her husband Charles, who also had a wonderful career in the same field though now deceased.
Having lived in several different cities during her tender age, Ray Eames was born in Sacramento, California then moved to New York in 1933. This is where she first studied abstract painting with Hans Hoffman that eventually led her to furniture designing later on. Ray Eames began her studies at the Canbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan towards the end of 1940 where she eventually met her husband to be Charles Eames. They both had similar career options and were married the following year and settled in Los Angeles, California.
Ray Eames and her husband Charles led an exemplary career in design as well as architecture. Both Ray and Charles Eames now feature in the new series “By Architects”. It is an innovative project whose main objective is to highlight objects as well as furniture designed by some of the most acknowledged architects of the 20th century.
Ray Eames along with her husband Charles are best known for their contributions to industrial design, film, photography , and furniture design especially the Eames chair, as well as architecture. After getting married in 1941, they both moved to California. Its here their furniture design career in moulded plywood all began. Earlier on, both Ray and Charles found the need to come up with high quality furniture and yet affordable.
For many years, the Eames’ tried different ways to meet this challenge. They designed chairs used in all kinds of places ranging from collapsible sofas for homes, chairs for airports, stadiums, schools as well as offices. Most of these chairs were designed in four materials for Herman Miller. They were designed in cast aluminium, bent and welded wire mesh, as well as fibreglass-reinforced plastic.
According to Ray Eames, the main issue was to look for a seat and back form that comfortably supports the human body using flexible materials instead of cushioned upholstery or three dimensionally shaped surfaces. According to Ray Eames, what works is better than what looks good since what works, works, but what looks good can change.
The immediate concern Ray Eames had was to come up with not only a single shell that would be comfortable without cushions, but could also be mass-produced. This concept was experimented with the Eames’ along with their colleagues throughout the early 40s. The Eames’ developed chairs for the museum of modern arts using organic designs.
Ray Eames along with her husband’s fibreglass chair solved the problem of making a seat out of a single body-fitting shell. It became even more alluring to the Eames’ than plywood with the progressive quality as well as the mobility of the fibreglass material compared to stamped metal or plywood.
Zenith Plastics had used fibreglass to reinforce plastic on airplane radar domes that turned out to be a big success. The Eames’ and Zenith re-conceptualized the use of the fibreglass material that created one of the very first one-piece plastic chairs that had an exposed surface rather than the upholstered surface.

Eileen Gray was born in 1878 as the fifth and last born. Her family was aristocratic and wealthy. Gray’s father was an amateur painter and passed the passion of his work to his daughter. The many tours that Eileen Gray was taken on by her father gave her some approach to design.
She fancied varnish and would look for the fundamentals of varnish work. She remained in Paris most of her working life. When she moved back to France, she met one of her friends Seizo, who was working in the lacquer industry. She pursued her work and exhibited in it when she was 35 years old. After that, she had moderate success in the same field.
During the First World War, Eileen Gray and her friend Seizo moved to London because they could no longer work. During this period, they entirely depended on their families for financial support. After the war ended, they returned to Paris and Eileen Gray was offered a job to decorate an apartment. She designed essentials for the house and furnished it with furniture she had designed. The designers who reviewed it recommended her innovativeness and viewed her work.
After this success, Eileen Gray opened her own gallery in Paris to exhibit and sell her work. She ensured that her work was good enough to represent her even when she was away, since she was still timid in the field. She later focused on furniture design and architecture. She designed buildings and houses for people and the furniture to be placed in the interior. She was the centre post of modern movement, and this enabled her to be recognized slowly as an architect and designer.
Eileen Gray was solitary and did not involve herself in much social activity. She then designed a new home for herself and furnished it. She continued with architectural studies while still following her career.
When the Second World War started, Eileen Gray stuck at home for one year but later was forced to move. In this incidence, she lost most of her precious possessions. After the war, she returned to Paris and stayed alone most of the time. She took her time and started working on new projects. Most of the people had started to forget about Eileen Gray’s design work by this time. At around seventy years of age, she started losing her hearing and sight. At eighty, she changed an ancient hay-barn into a home over the summer season. From there, she continued with her work.
Before she died, her work was displayed in most of the exhibitions in London. Through out her career, Eileen Gray worked alone most of the time and was independent. After she died, people truly appreciated her work for what it was.
In 1968, a magazine was published about her work and was well received. After purchasing her archive, the National Museum opened a permanent exhibition concerning her work. The sales of her articles are still done up to this date.

Antonio Citterio admits that he normally converses with other designers in Milan. He believes that in order to come up with good designs you have to consult with some of the best designers in the industry. People’s opinions vary depending on their age and experience, thus when carrying out design work it is important that you incorporate most of the positive aspects that your colleagues advise you on.
Antonio Citterio has worked with several companies as a designer. He looks back at his accomplishments with nostalgia. Other than getting satisfaction from the design works that he has successfully accomplished in the past, he also looks up to some designers, for example Luis Kah, Siza and many others.
Antonio Citterio believes that one of the things that have made him successful as a designer is that he does not in any way allow market forces to interfere with his work. He usually does his design work in the best way he knows how.
He advises upcoming designers that it is better to rely on your instincts. If an instruction is not working out with the required design, do not force it. If you can not work it out, just abandon it all together. Antonio Citterio advises upcoming designers not to limit themselves to their native country’s boundaries.
Antonio Citterrio believes that the international market is very competitive and fair. Thus, if you are a good designer your work will easily stand out among the rest if it is exemplary. As a designer you need to identify your niche market and then work hard towards acquiring and maintaining your clients.
Antonio Citterio appreciates the kind or revolution that the internet has brought to people’s lives. He says that thanks to the internet he can comfortably work in various offices across Europe, for example in Milan and Harmburg.
Antonio Citterio believes that because of the internet, he can receive various designs in real time from several designers across the globe. Even though several people nowadays do their shopping online, Antonio Citterio believes that online shopping takes the fun away from shopping.
In physical shopping an individual would either drive or walk to the shopping centre and do some shopping. In the process you might meet some of your friends whom you will engage in a chit chat. Online shopping cannot afford you the luxury of randomly meeting your friends and exchanging those knowing looks.
Antonio Citterio however believes that in the future, he will be able to make various designs and then upload them online. Anyone interested would then go to the physical address where his offices are located and make the purchase. The designs would enable the individuals to change various aspects of their houses in terms of design.
Antonio Citterio believes that architects are not afraid of unemployment. This is because they always look at the future with a positive attitude. What worries Antonio Citterio however is the wide disparity between the rich countries and the poor countries. He believes that something can be done to reduce the disparity.

They say that your life reflects your work, and this can never be truer with an esteemed and renowned designer like Eero Aarnio. His life and times have reflected his work, thanks to his passion and his love for safe types of plastic. All of his work has been made from friendly materials, and even though he has worked with traditional materials like steel and wood, he has been famous for using playful shapes and colours that are manufactured in plastic, including toys and children’s furniture.
Eero Aarnio studied from 1954 to 1957 at the Institute of Industrial Arts. After his graduation, he worked with a famous and also well renowned Finnish designer IImari Tapiovaara. In 1960 he started working for the Asko Company before deciding to go alone as an industrial and interior designer and establishing his own design office in 1962.
In 1966, Eero Aarnio designed and introduced his Globe Chair to the market. This chair won the approval of many design presses, irrespective of it being expensive and that it was formed on a limited extent.
Because of how the Globe Chair had won the acclaim of many people, the Asko Company that he had previously worked for requested Eero Aarnio to be its limited partner. The term of their limited partnership was that he was supposed to use new materials and modes of production to design experimental furniture.
Thanks to the new partnership, Eero Aarnio’s professional image grew so much during that time and contributed significantly to his being famous in the world. At that time, many Finnish designers worked with wood, but what made Eero Aarnio stand out was his working with plastics. His main idea was to create new designs at very low cost use materials that were up-to-date. Another thing that inspired him to create the new design was that he wanted his designs to be both striking and durable.
In 1970, Eero Aarnio started using Polyurethane foam in his creation of new designs. The Pony chair that was introduced on the market in 1970 is one such example. This has been one of the most extraordinary chairs in the history of furniture of the 20th century. This chair has distinguished so much of Eero Aarnio’s work. Eero Aarnio’s work has always been known to be an inspiration to many, and he is always quoted as saying that ‘design means constant renewal, realignment and growth’.
This is probably the reason why each piece of his work has always stood out from the rest and always outshines the work of other designers.
In 2005, Eero Aarnio joined another Finnish company Artek as a freelance designer. His outstanding work has always taken him places and earned him many offers from established companies around the world. Eero Aarnio is admired by many Finnish companies, and envied by many designers all over the world. His work has been through many generations, and the generations are yet to see the best of him.

So you need a storage shed to keep your outdoor items properly protected. You have shopped around to see what’s available, but you just can’t find one that suits your needs. Well, that’s no problem. You can build one yourself ,even if you’re not a carpenter. All that is required is ,for you to follow some quick and easy step by step plans, and you will have it built in no time.
Step One
Is to determine where you want to build it. You need to have a designated area planned out before you begin. What space you have available will determine the maximum size you can build it.
Step two
Once you know your exact size it’s a good idea to rough sketch what you want. There are many home improvement stores that you can take your sketch to. They will draft up your storage shed plans for you, according to the specs you provide them with. They will also supply you with a list of materials that you will require. So now you have your plans. In addition they will provide you with a guide on how to perform each step.
Step Three
Purchase the materials you will need as outlined in your plan. it’s a good idea to have everything at hand so you don’t have to keep running out for supplies once you start construction.
Step Four
Now you are ready to start. Level your ground and prepare to lay the foundation. You would have already decided whether you are going to have a wood plank floor or concrete slab type.
Step Five
Next comes the side walls. Put your materials aside that you are going to use for this. It is better to construct the walls on the ground then lift them into position once they are together. Just follow your guide for the how to instructions.
Step Six
Now its time to start the roof. You will need to build your trusses. So construct one and then use it as a template for the rest. Once again follow your guide on how to build the trusses.
Step Seven
Your storage shed should now be taking on some shape. Its time to build the end walls. How you do this will depend on what you have chosen in your plans. Be sure to stay with your original plans.
Step Eight
Now you are getting down to the final steps. The trim is just as important as the rest of your structure. Its what gives it that finished look so don’t scrimp here.
Step Nine
Your last two steps are applying the shingles for the roof then treating the wood. The wood must have some type of protective coating on it to protect it from the elements and rotting. This can be varnish, stains or paints whatever is your preference.
Step Ten
You’re done! All that’s left is to sit back and admire your completed storage shed. If you hadn’t built it yourself you would think it was a professional store bought model.

To have an ideal set up for a home office some of the factors that can affect setting up include storage space, lighting, and determining the most important supplies and equipment that the office will need.
The indispensable home office supplies and equipment are:
Storage space includes filing cabinets, shelves, boxes, closets and jars for small supplies like clips and rubber bands. The thrifty way is to use old shoeboxes as containers for the small office supplies more so if the business is just starting and budget is being considered. One filing cabinet is enough for home based businesses just enough to accommodate business records and files. Some interior design experts suggest vertical storage access with open shelves to generate a smooth flowing workspace.
Lighting is another factor that has to be considered in home office set up. As they say in any work area, poor lighting can hinder work performance of the employee. An ideal set up is energy efficient and durable lighting like color improved warm fluorescent bulbs fixed to the ceiling or cost effective halogen bulbs. One can also use blinds or curtains to control light. It is also a good choice to have desk lamps or floor lamps for reading purposes.
Home office equipments are needed in the actual business operation and hence it’s very significant to know the basic equipments so one can save money. The basic necessities include the computer, printer, fax machine, copy machine, voice mail system or answering machine, cordless phone, shredders and scanners.
On top of the list is the computer, which can either be a laptop or a desktop type. It’s not a must to have a new one as long as it is a good enough to help you perform your business tasks though experts say that newer versions are more energy efficient than old ones.
A quality printer is a must to produce the hard copy of your files and worksheets. Printer choices include the dot matrix and laser ink jet printers.
Fax machines are used to receive data and even calls. Four types of facsimile include direct thermal (uses heat-sensitive coated paper); thermal transfer (which can use plain paper); ink jet; and laser type.
Copy machine or copiers are used to reproduce files inside the office for documenting purposes. Low volume copier is ideal for home based office to help save energy.
Scanners are used to scan original documents for computer filing purposes.
Shredders are important in disposing unnecessary documents and files.
For communication purposes and business transactions it is essential to have a land based telephone or cordless phone.
Answering machines are needed when no one is available to answer important calls.
With all these electrically powered equipments, it is a must to have adequate electrical outlets and surge protectors to stop avoid circuit overloading and to prevent fire.
Most office accessories are already WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity so as to pave way for a more productive work.
The home office worker just like in any other work area can choose from the wide range of other office essentials like pens, coupon bonds, folders, envelopes, pencils, markers, glues, clips, fasteners, compact and floppy discs, and many others.

Not many people think that there is a noticeable difference between the work of an amateur painter and that of a professional contractor performing the work for them. Many people work hard to get their home looking the way they want it to look, but realize a little too late that a contractor could do the work better and allow the homeowner to rest and relax. Although many people enjoy doing the work, hiring a contractor can actually save money in the long run, especially if the homeowner is not experienced or skilled in the craft.
Home contractors painting your home can be a joy for you, the homeowner. Their skill and expertise in the field are unparalleled by homeowners and their often amateur jobs. Training and practice is usually what sets them apart from others attempting the same work. With their specific training and the experience they gain from working as a painting contractor, home contractors painting your house leave a professional looking paint job for all to see. With so many people looking at the outside of your home, it is imperative for many to hire somebody who can make their home look good. The exterior paint job is what people notice most about a home when they first lay eyes upon it, even if they do not realize it. The color and paint job reflects how the rest of your yard and home will look on the outside, so it is a good idea to make sure that whoever is performing the work, perform it well.
Many people enjoy working outdoors and using their own two hands to create and perform home improvement projects. It gives them a sense of purpose, satisfaction and accomplishment that comes with completing a job oneself. It may also double as a relaxation tool for many who have stressful jobs and want to get away from their daily grind. While these are all good things that can come from working on one’s own house, there are also a few negative things that can happen if the homeowner is ill-prepared. The most obvious, of course, being a poor finished product if the painter does not know what they are doing. This is where having home contractors painting your home can save you a huge headache of redoing the project or hiring somebody to do the work once you have already done it once yourself, thus unnecessarily costing you time and money.
Preparing oneself to take on the rigors of exterior home painting can save the homeowner a lot of time and money. This could mean reading up on painting the exterior of a house, looking for internet resources to help prepare oneself or taking the time to make sure that home contractors painting your home turns out to be a good decision. Hiring the right team to do the work is important, as hiring the wrong person can be disastrous. Take some time to research the contractors you are considering and choose the one you feel best fits your needs and budget.
