Unique Baby Shower Gifts - Baby Gift Baskets, Personalized Gifts And More

Thursday 9 October 2008 @ 9:35 am

When it comes to baby showers, one of the moments most anticipated is the gift giving segment of the event. There are no words that can describe the feeling when you are watching the mommy-to-be reach for the present you gave and begin to open it. The excitement is overwhelming, and your heart fills with joy as you watch her eyes glisten while she unwraps it. The best part of all this is satisfaction knowing that your gift is unique, original, and will be of great use to the mommy-to-be and her precious baby. This article will offer some great gift-giving ideas that are distinct, extremely useful, and will make the expectant mother smile from ear to ear.

One heartwarming idea that is adorable and shows thoughtfulness and care is a personalized piggy bank. These days, parents are placing an emphasis on saving for their baby’s future and career. A customized piggy bank with a financial seed towards the baby’s savings fund makes a great gift from a family member. This is not only a cute gift, but also a smart one; it is crucial that parents begin thinking of their child’s future from the day they are born. Some people prefer giving a piggy bank with a gift card from a baby department store or children’s clothing store.

Baby gift baskets are also very original, and each basket is going to be a one-of-a-kind gift. Buy a decent sized pretty basket (the material, shape, and color of the basket are up to you), fill it up with items that you think will be the most beneficial to the expectant mother, and decorate it. Popular items to fill your baby gift basket with are baby bottles, bibs, pacifiers, infant toys, baby clothing, and gift cards. Some people throw in a little something extra for the mommy, such as a spa massage gift card or a book. Candy and chocolates can also make your basket sweeter, and will satisfy some of mommy’s cravings. Whatever you decide to put in your basket, make sure to make it is personalized, and consider items that you know the expectant mother will need or want. Personalized baby jewelry is a popular gift in Latin America, but not so common in the United States. A tiny golden bracelet with the baby’s name is endearing and beautiful, and it will make a great keepsake as your baby grows older. Any kind of baby jewelry, whether it be personalized or not, makes a wonderful gift which everyone will think is absolutely adorable.

Today, a new trend for mothers in the United States is to sport a cute, stylish baby diaper bag, which they can easily turn into tote bags or even laptop cases once the baby grows older. From designer baby bags to non-label, trendy baby bags, there are numerous different types of diaper bags that will look great and fit budgets of all sizes. Some popular designer baby bags, or “multi-function totes”, as they call them, are made by COACH, Kate Spade, and Louis Vuitton. However, today, there are many non-label, cool baby bags that are equally as trendy and a fraction of the cost. cost.

Different Types of Baby Cribs

Wednesday 8 October 2008 @ 10:12 pm

Baby products, supplies and furniture come in different choices available, from inexpensive choices to expensive ones. Baby furniture like cribs have several types to choose from, you can find sets of cribs including baby crib bedding and baby blankets . Cribs are one of the most important furniture for babies, thus moms would love the idea of receiving such items during baby shower bash or baptism day. When buying for your toddler’s furniture, like cribs, the length of your budget needs to be considered, this is one of the best way to determine what type of crib is suitable for you. The kinds of baby cribs that may suit into your budget preference are standard, convertible, canopy and round.

Perhaps, one of the most popular and typical cribs for babies are standard cribs. You see this type of furniture often. There are two types of standard cribs, the single drop side and the double drop side. The single drop side has one side which can be adjusted or dropped down to ease the process of getting the child inside the crib. While double drop side has both sides that can be adjusted and dropped down. This may be ideal where the crib is freely standing in a room, and often it is placed where the other side is leaning against the wall and therefor one side is only you’ll be needing when dropping down.

Convertible cribs are one of your practical option. The good thing about this type is, starting as a baby crib, it can then be converted into a toddler bed, daybed or full sized bed. The head and foot of this crib can be used as a headboard and foot board including a simple kit that be bought together with the crib

Buying a convertible crib is an ideal way to save extra dollars compared with purchasing larger sized furniture when needed. However, one disadvantage is you can’t change the overall structure of your child’s furniture as he or she gets older. Some moms would like to have variety of decors and furniture for their child each year. So to solve this issue, choose a wooden or metal made crib that can be decorated with several kinds of designs and styles.

If you opt for an elegant setting of your baby, a canopy crib is perfect. This has four post at the corners to hold a canopy frame. You can then accentuate it with canopy fabric onto the frame to create a canopy. This one can be very functional also where you can give security and protection with canopy as partial enclosure for your little one. . However, settling with canopy needs you to be extra cautious. Excess fabric can be easily grabbed by the child and may turn to be hazardous, so it is more safer to make sure first that canopy materials and hardware are well kept from your child.

One of today’s popular furniture trend for babies are round cribs. They are the very comfortable for babies when sleeping in any position. Also, they can provide ease for parents when getting into their child. These can make a very cute baby shower gift for any newborn child, as well as gifts for mom.

Movement Essential For Your Baby’s Optimal Health

Wednesday 8 October 2008 @ 9:43 pm

As life gets busier and more demands are put on parents, inevitably more is demanded of the children we drag along to follow our agenda. For many this is “normal” life. Lets consider one of the ways this affects our children, especially those up to 3 years old. Children of all ages need to move, and movement is especially important in the early stages of development. Starting in utero, the movements of the baby are not just random movements but they serve a clear purpose. They are called infant reflexes and may be described as written codes in all human beings.

These reflexes first of all serve as a protection for the baby and secondly, studies show that these primary movements are partially responsible for brain development. They trigger the development of the sensory system (smell, taste, touch, sight and hearing), the proprioceptive system (the ability to know where the body is in space and time, feeling grounded and stable) and the formation of the links between the two systems. These reflexive movements are also responsible for building the nervous system and myelination of the nerves. These movements continue after birth, and through the newborn, infant and early childhood stages.

Most of these infant reflexes are integrated by the time a child is three and then develop into lifelong reflexes. Factors such as physical, chemical and emotional trauma all contribute to blocks that may not allow the reflexes to integrate. Traumatic birth and cesarean section are also factors. Although we may not be able to control some of these factors, one we can control is freedom of movement once baby is born.

When an infant is confined to a car seat, bouncy seat or walker for long periods of time, they are not allowed the freedom of movement necessary to stimulate proper development. Providing a safe and comfortable place for baby to move is a simple way to stimulate healthy development. Although baby may complain a bit about their “tummy time”, they will be exercising important reflexes. You might be able to make tummy time for pleasant for your baby by lying on your own tummy facing him to keep him company. Why not get a book that shows what the particular reflexes look like and see if you notice your baby at work? There are ways to stimulate the reflexes for exercise as well. It is truly fascinating way to spend time with your baby!

Studies have also shown that children with certain challenges such as ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, autism, anxiety disorders, aggression, etc., have certain reflexes that are still active long after they should have been integrated. The great news is that integration is possible with help from someone trained in reflex integration. One of the ways these experts help children with mild to moderate brain damage is to get them on the floor crawling! With the rise in the number of children with challenges it is good to educate ourselves in how we can help our children with safe, drug free and FUN alternatives. It can start as simply as allowing them freedom to play and move. In this case the more the better!

Why Choose Natural Products For Your Baby and Toddler?

Wednesday 8 October 2008 @ 9:37 pm

As a mother you just spent nine months carrying this new life around. It is amazing what a life changing impact a small, helpless baby can have on your life. The new baby has transformed you into a mother and suddenly everything feels more important – including the products you choose to put in your home and on your baby’s skin. There is nothing in the world you would not do for your new baby, you want to offer them the best you have to give. After breastfeeding, using only natural, non-toxic products around and on your baby is one of the first steps in protecting them.

Why use natural baby products?

Many synthetic ingredients are found in cosmetics, and even in over the counter baby products. These products don’t cause immediate visible signs of toxicity, but can affect the health of the baby negatively over time through repeated use. Some of these can lead to rashes, respiratory distress, even long term health consequences.

Are there safer alternatives?

Thankfully, there are many natural options available to prevent excessive use of toxic and allergenic ingredients. Many times natural, homemade baby products can be made in your own kitchen if you’re so inclined, saving you money. If not, most can be found at your local stores.

Cloth diapers and homemade wipes help cut down on rashes and allergic reactions and save lots of money. New improved design of cloth diapers have made them just as convenient as disposable diapers. Homemade baby wipes can be easily made and help prevent diaper rash as well as producing less disposable waste. To make your own wipes, mix one fourth cup olive oil or baby oil with two cups of distilled water and one fourth cup of natural baby shampoo to

Tips For Preparing Your Only Child to Become a Sibling

Wednesday 8 October 2008 @ 8:19 pm

Having your second child is an exciting time, however it can also be stressful for your first child, who suddenly goes from being your one and only child, to a big brother or sister. Whether your only child is 2 or 10 there will be an adjustment period for him or her. Fortunately, there are some things that you can do as parents to help prepare them for their new role. Here are just a few ideas:

Big brothers and big sisters are special. Speak in positive terms to them about what it means to be a big sis or big brother. Really play up their new found role and help them to feel special and needed. You will want to discuss how they can be your helper and how much the baby will need them. You may want to assign them a specific task, something age appropriate. For a younger child, fetching diapers for you might be a good one. Help your child to appreciate how much you need their help. At the same time, don’t go overboard and talk about the baby too much. Your older child is unique and needs to understand that your love for him is secure.

Don’t plan any other major changes. This would not be a good time to introduce any other major changes into their life, such as potty training, different sleeping arrangements or any other similar changes. You don’t want to overwhelm them nor add any added stress to their lives or yours. If your toddler is still nursing, there is no reason to stop during your pregnancy or even afterwards when the new baby arrives. Many moms have found that tandem nursing (breastfeeding siblings who are not twins) is very rewarding and a wonderful way to ease the transition for the older child. When they are assured of your place in their lap, they are not as likely to be jealous or resent the new baby.

Talk to them. Children understand more than we think. So, spend some time talking with them about the big event. You can tell them about what will happen when you go to have the baby, where they will be staying, and what they can expect. If you are having the baby at home or in a birthing center, you might want to consider allowing them to be with you at the birth. Children who are close by the mother during her labor are more likely to view the new baby as “ours” instead of an alien intruder! Some parents have found it helpful to read books that talk about getting a new baby in the house. These often explain how new babies need constant care and feeding.

Get help. Going from one to two (or two to three, and on and on!) is a wonderful time to ask friends, family, Grandparents and others for a little help. While you and the baby are resting, could someone play with your toddler, arrange a playdate or take them to the park for a couple of hours? A little extra one on one time with a beloved adult can make up for the fact that you are going to be giving the toddler a little less attention for awhile. This is a time for Dad to step up too. While he does need time to bond with the newborn, this can be a time of growth in the older child as he embraces Dad as someone who can also meet his needs.

Watch your language. When the baby arrives, be careful how you phrase things. If your older child asks you for something and you can’t help them because you’re caring for the baby, don’t “blame” it on the baby. Say something like, “My hands are busy now, but I can play with you in a few minutes. Why don’t you come snuggle next to me and I’ll read you a story?”

Another tip that some moms have found helpful is to talk up the older child to the baby. We moms love to go ga-ga over our babies, but why not brag on the older sibling? “Ooh look at what big brother is doing! He’s building a block tower and it’s sooooo tall!” This can make the older child’s heart swell with pride.

Don’t feel guilty. It’s very common for moms to feel guilty about displacing their older child, but children have been dealing with the arrival of siblings since the beginning of time! They will be just fine, and will gain a playmate and perhaps a lifelong friend. Be positive about the transition and your child will likely pick up on your emotions.

How to Care For Children’s Wooden Toys

Thursday 2 October 2008 @ 2:32 am

With proper care, your child’s wooden toys can last for generations. Wooden toys have a hardiness and natural appearance that plastic toys cannot match. As a natural material, wood has an advantage over plastic toys. Wood is not bacteria friendly and is considered an anti-bacterial surface. When this quality is combined with the wood’s strength, it is easy to see why wooden toys are a superior toy product when compared to plastic toys.

Wooden toys should be treated with mild cleaners that will not dry out the toy’s surface. The best way to maintain wooden toys is to avoid strong chemicals such as bleach and detergents. Both these harsh ingredients can change the appearance of the toy through whitening or drying the surface. Wooden surfaces can absorb harsh ingredients because of the wood’s porous nature. Bleach, detergents and other harsh or synthetic cleaners are typical strong chemicals that should be avoided in favor of gentler cleansing ingredients.

You can use mild cleansers such as natural soap or a vinegar solution to cleanse wooden toys effectively. Natural soap will clean the wooden toy without drying out its surface or leaving a chemical residue on the toys surface. Vinegar will cleanse the surface and acts as a mild disinfectant. Depending on the amount of soil on the wooden toy, you with either use a soft brush, damp cloth, cleansing spray or a soapy bath.

A lightly soiled wooden toy is the easiest to clean. When a wooden toy is lightly soiled, you can gently brush any dirt or debris away. If necessary, you can use a soft damp cloth to clean the surface.

For a wooden toy that has a bit more dirt on it, you can add a few drops of liquid natural soap to a spray bottle full of warm water for a cleansing spray. You could also use a 50/50 water and vinegar spray to clean the toy as well. Just spray the surface and quickly wipe the surface clean.

If a toy is heavily soiled, you can wash it briefly in a bath of soapy water. You should avoid leaving the wooden toys submerged in water for any length of time. Water can misshape wooden toys and mar the surface of the grain. Avoid steam cleaning the toy for the same reasons. After cleansing the wooden toy in the soapy bath, quickly rinse the toy and wipe it dry. You can place the toy in the rack to dry. Once the toy is fully dry, it can be used again.

Wooden toys are prone to changes in temperature and humidity. Do not leave wooden toys outside overnight or for long periods. The sun and elements can change the appearance and shape of wooden toys.

When wooden toys are properly maintained, it is possible for many generations of children to enjoy the same wooden toy. Many a grandparent’s wooden toy has survived time to land in the happy hands of a beloved grandchild or grandchildren. Wooden toys are valued in many households for their durability and natural beauty.

How to Prepare For Your Childs Party

Thursday 2 October 2008 @ 2:01 am

If you and your family plan on throwing your child a party, I have some practical tips for you. These tips are all safe and fun but also very useful. I will discuss outdoor parties in addition to parties thrown at public locations such as Chucky Cheese. You don’t want to miss my personal take on themed parties either. It may not be a popular opinion but it need to be said. There is no set way when and where to have parties and since each kid is different, their parties should be also.

Activities

For out door parties, kites can be great. A nice sized park area in the spring is an ideal location for a kid’s party. Picnic baskets and blankets make it relaxing while the kid’s run around the park. Games such as pin the tail on the donkey for younger children, pilatas or even races could all be done during the party.

While various activities and contest are occupying the kid’s, parents and guest can help with the food, drinks and restroom needs. Some things you will need to bring are candles, insect repellent; trash bags and water just to name a few. Sports related fun could include volleyball, softball and potato sack races. If you want to cook, bring the grill for some nice barbecue. If you have limited space in your backyard but would like to have an outdoor party, check out your local parks for a location.

Public Locations

Many businesses specialize in hosting kid’s parties. Roller skating rinks, arcades and pizza parlors all have party deals set up. Normally the food and drinks are provided along with whatever service they include. An arcade party with provide the kid’s with tokens and tickets while a skating rink might provide the food and free skate rentals. Since the locations are usually open to the public, it’s like having many people celebrating your child’s birthday. However, many places will let you rent their location exclusively for the right price.

In some instances, they will extend their hours just for the birthday party well past their normal closing hours. Depending on the locations package, this could be a good way to save lots of money and still offer the same amount of fun. Also, you aren’t doing the work such as cooking and providing the entertainment because you are paying for that through the birthday caterer. A good place to check for a catered party is a mall based arcade game room.

Party Themes?

I for one have not seen the benefits of themed parties. Theme parties are those that follow a certain pattern in all aspects of the party. In my own experience it is a waste of money to pay extra for a cake with a character on it. The same goes for plates, candles and napkins. If your child just loves a cartoon, that doesn’t mean that the cartoon should dictate the party. It is much cheaper to purchase regular party supplies opposed to getting the same supplies with cartoons on them. My advice would simply be don’t waste your time. Too much of one thing looks tacky, especially if it comes in the image of a yellow sponge. In all reality the theme itself usually steals the show away from the kid.

If you are going to through kids parties you need to have the best toys and activities. Check out our baby toiletries for all your infants needs.

Where Have All the Bicycles Gone?

Thursday 2 October 2008 @ 12:39 am

Childhood has moved indoors. What a shame. Children are meant to be running free in open spaces, climbing trees, finding frogs and turtles, biking to the playground, and being hard to find at dinnertime. Today’s child is most likely to be found sitting in front of a screen – TV, video games, computers. 8-10 year olds reportedly spend an average of 6 hours a day staring at a screen. Given an additional 6 hours spent in school plus eating, sleeping, homework and we have taken our children’s worlds and turned them into tiny, structured spaces with little physical activity and almost no free play time. Organized sports have become the play of many children but actually only about a quarter of all children are playing an organized sport during any season of the year. So the vast majority are just sitting around, growing obese at an alarming rate and missing out on important socializing.

How did we come to such a place where the lives of our children are so restricted and isolated? Well, we can start with the lives of their parents. American adults, as chronicled in Robert Putnam’s “Bowling Alone”, have become isolated from their community. Participation in all aspects of community life has dropped dramatically over the past 30 years. One of the interesting points in Putnam’s book is that bowling remains very popular, but bowling leagues have virtually disappeared. Adults no longer feel they have time to make commitments to be with others on a regular basis. A colleague of mine just remarked about how she wanted to start playing bridge again, found some friends with a similar desire, found a teacher, and then discovered her friends were unable to commit to a regular time for lessons.

What has happened to American adults? Changes in family structure are a major factor. With so many divorces, we have a much higher percentage of single heads of households and blended families, resulting in much more complex life schedules for parents and children. Further, dual career parents have become the norm and work has increasingly encroached on the privacy of home life with the advent of cell phones and computers. Americans work longer hours than any other industrialized nation.

In this context of reduced hands on parenting and overwhelming schedules, the current generation of parents has evolved into an anxious group who are overly concerned about the safety and the academic/intellectual development of their children. Too bad … for the parents and the children. We end up with smarter fat children who are more stressed and growing up too fast. Higher rates of anxiety and depression are no accident.

So where have all the bicycles gone? Getting that first 2-wheeler used to be one of childhoods most exciting moments. It meant an expansion of the child’s world. The opportunity to travel beyond one’s street and meet friends at the playground, ball field, or just go to someone’s house on your own was an exciting new stage of independence. It also meant lots of exercise. But bicycle sales are plummeting. Over 20% decline in just the past 5 years. Now less than half of children ages 7-11 regularly ride a bike. This is a serious change in the culture of our children’s lives.

But it is not just the crazy schedule of parents or the increased temptation of “screens” to play with. A major role in the narrowing world of children is parental fear. Surveys indicate parents have a distorted expectation of the risk that if they allow their children to roam freely about the town, those children may be abducted by child molesters. School playgrounds are no longer deemed safe places to hang out. The woods are no longer a great place to explore. Biking across town has come to mean an increased possibility of being abducted.

Parents couldn’t be more wrong. In fact, there are only 100-130 stranger abductions a year in the U.S. This is a miniscule number. I’m not being insensitive to the pain of those parents who have had a child abducted and molested or killed but please let’s keep some perspective here. You and your child are 3 times more likely to be hit by lightening at a soccer game than your child is likely to experience a stranger abduction!

Notice I keep emphasizing “stranger abduction.” 75% of all abductions are carried out by people the child knows, I suspect most of which are done by divorced parents who are upset about custody arrangements. Children running free – meeting at the playground or in someone’s yard – are very safe. Not only safe, but these children are learning to make creative use of their time, being physically active, and improving their social skills. And it’s free!! Now what more could you ask for.

So please, restrict access to screens, send your children out of the house, encourage them to go places on their own, and don’t just smile when your child opts to use instant messaging to talk to her friend next door. Turn off the computer and send her next door! Consider it a pleasure to yell down the street or call a friend to find your child at dinnertime instead of simply having to pry him away from his XBox. Let’s make bicycles something special for children once again.

Baby Girl Bedding - Great Themes For Your Nursery

Monday 29 September 2008 @ 11:29 pm

If you are expecting a new little girl, no doubt you are excited about her coming into your life. While you probably can’t wait until she arrives, you also will want to make sure that you are prepared before the due date. One of the most important things to get ready is the baby room, and you’ll want to pick out beautiful bedding and matching accessories for the perfect nursery. Lucky for you, there are plenty of themes available; in fact, there are so many that you may find it difficult to pick out the right one. So, if you need a few ideas for inspiration, here are some great themes to consider using for a girl’s nursery.

Designs By Laura Ashley

If you are looking for great baby girl bedding, you may want to consider the bedding designs of Laura Ashley - a perennial favorite and afforadably priced, too. There are a variety of colors and patterns that you can choose from, mainly focused around beautiful pastels. You can find these collections on the internet and in stores such as Target.

Lady Bug Theme

Another great idea for your nursery is the lady bug theme. While an absolutely adorable theme, there is a possibility that the red, black, and white that usually forms the color scheme might be too stimulating for your daughter’s resting place. To counter this, try to avoid highly contrasting designs or large patches of black and red (no giant ladybugs!). If you do choose this theme, you can do a lot of the decorating yourself - buy a ladybug bedding set, and use stencils to decorate the walls.

Various Character Themes

There are a variety of great character themes that will make a wonderful choice in the you little girl’s new room. Options include Winnie the Pooh, Precious Moments, Disney Princess, Mickey Sweet Dreams, Hello Kitty, or even Snoopy. There are so many great character themes that you can find, so you’ll be sure to find the perfect one for your new sweetheart.

Princess Theme

The princess theme is understandably very popular for baby girls. No doubt she’ll be your little princess, so why not carry out the theme in her room? You can find beautiful princess themed bedding, furniture, accessories and more. It’s very easy to decorate the nursery in this theme, and you can paint murals or borders on the walls that will go along with the theme as well. Consider even making the room like a castle, complete with everything you can imagine in the princess theme. No doubt this will be a room that everyone, especially your new baby girl, will end up loving.

Patchwork and Plaid Themes

Patchwork themes and plaid themes are also great ideas when you are decorating for a baby girl. Simply pick out a color that you want to go with, and then you can use accenting colors to go along with it. Painting the room will be simple, since you should be able to easily match the colors with paint. There are many great themes of this style to choose from and you can easily find them on the internet.

Celestial Themes

Going with a celestial theme for your baby girl nursery is a wonderful idea and it’s very easy to find great baby bedding in these themes. You’ll be able to send your baby to dreamland with ease when you use this type of a theme. Some ideas include constellations, moons, planets, the sun, stars, and other things you’ll find in the heavens. Whites, pastels, and blues are great colors to use for these types of themes. This is one of the few themes that you will want to seriously consider decoration the ceiling, either with paint or glow in the dark stars (be mindful of safety precautions). There are many great wall decorations and bedding choices available in this theme, so you’ll easily end up falling in love with a celestial nursery to welcome your new baby girl into the world.

As you can see, there are definitely a variety of great themes available when it comes to choosing a nursery theme. With so many to choose from, it can be difficult to make a choice - just let your eyes and heart guide you. If you are planning to have more children, you might want to consider a gender-neutral theme that can be re-used. If the nursery will become your daughter’s room as she grows up, think about going with a theme that she can continue to enjoy as she grows older. Take your time, consider your baby girl, and consider one of these great themes.
